Memorial Day – Honoring Our Unmarked Veterans

Recently it’s come to my attention that I have an ancestor with an unmarked grave who was a ‘veteran’ – on a technicality he didn’t serve in the Civil War, but he did serve right before it. He’s buried in a cemetery in Washington, DC but his grave is unmarked, although thankfully a cousin knows which one and which plot!

I did some research because I remembered that the U.S. Veteran’s Administration provides, for free, headstones to unmarked graves. I confirmed that this is indeed still true, so here are some links for you…

CLAIM FOR STANDARD GOVERNMENT HEADSTONE OR MARKER Form for a headstone for an unmarked grave.

Headstones, Markers and Medallions – “The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) furnishes upon request, at no charge to the applicant, a Government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any deceased eligible Veteran in any cemetery around the world, regardless of their date of death.”

Veteran’s Administration’s Best practices for cleaning the headstones HTML format (and you KNOW they list D/2!!)
